Evaluation – Activity 7
Question: Looking back at you Preliminary Task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
Preliminary Task (September 2014):

Actual Horror Opening Project (March 2015)

The Preliminary task was the first media I had looked at and created as well as the people that were in my group for both tasks. When learning about the Preliminary task this was to see how our filming skills were. This was the first time that we had used any type of camera, and filmed using the skills of shot reverse shot, match on match action. These types were what we needed to include within our preliminary task, to prepare us ready for final project later on in the school year (March 2015). When doing the preliminary task we can see that we kept the camera to a steady hold, and when editing this task it was a hard task to complete, as this was all new to us however once learning the software, we enabled to produce a finished piece of work. However when it came to the final project later on in the year, I know that we needed to try and include the main 3 types of Match on match action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. We knew that these needed to be included. However lets see how we did...
Match on Match Action in the Preliminary Task and the Final Film:

This image is showing us the match on match scene that have been used within both the Preliminary task and the final film that we did. However, if I was to talk about this I would strongly say that we used more of this angle within the Premlinary task then what we did within the final film that we created. Therefore, I would say learning about these skills I can see that we have tried to add this technique into our main task however, I just wouldn't say there is enough of it but we have tried to add this. However, overall I think this is a skill that we developed and understood how to use however, I just didn't think we used enough of it within our final film compared with our preliminary task.
Shot/reverse shot within our Preliminary task and Final Film:

When looking at the shot/reverse shot that we have used I would say this was the most featured skill that we used into both task that we have done. As we can see when looking at the preliminary task we can see that we have used this for both of the main characters. Whereas when looking at it being used within our final film we can see that we used these shots mainly between the two characters as well. This is showing the similarity of skills that we have used in both set tasks, we have used this shot only with the main characters from the preliminary tasks it happens during the interview, when someone talks and the final film it used when the silhouette character appears when he goes back or when she goes back up against something, this shows the contrast between the two events within the final edit whenever the shot is used she leans back towards something.
The 180 degree rule within the Preliminary task and the final film:
When looking at the 180 degree rule we can see that more of this was used within the preliminary task, as when looking at this we based it more around the police interview type, so therefore they was looking more directly at each other across the table. Whereas looking at our final film not much of this rule was used, only around 1 or 2 scenes used this. One with the picture shown above and the other where she is facing the grave talking to her mum. This is showing even though it is a over the shoulder view as well she is also directly looking at the silhouette male which is giving the idea of the 180 degree rule being used. Therefore, we have understood the rule and we have applied some to our horror opening however just not as much as what we have within the preliminary task.
Point of View Shot used within the Final Film:
This is a new angle that we have learnt within our teaching lessons when doing about camera work and their angles, we learnt to use a point of view shot. Which this is a shot that is taken from somebody's perspective (what they are seeing). We thought using this shot would be a perfect technique to use within our horror opening, even though it wasn't used within our preliminary task we still wanted to use this. We mainly used this shot as the silhouettes perspective as he watches the little girl running for her life. This then creates more of an effect of using the shot as it would make the audience feel as if they are there/ or they are the character watching over.
Conclusion:
To conclude with this activity, as a group I believe that we have progressed from the preliminary task. I feel as if we have took this shots from the preliminary task into full detail, which the preliminary tasks make us understand ways in which our horror opening can be developed from it. There was many tasks that we didn't include much that was in the Premlinary task such as the match on match action and 180 degree rule this was because of how our story was and how the storyboard was, even though there was a couple of changes, however the landscape and setting we had like enclosed areas was hard to shoot most of our planned angles and shot in. However, as a group I happily state that I think that we have improved from the preliminary task as major editing and thought went into planning how we wanted it and what it needed to be and I believe this was done correctly with the help of understanding different shots to use from the preliminary task. Without the preliminary task I wouldn't think our horror opening would of been successful to what it has been when learning things from the preliminary task.

Question: How did you attract/address your audience?

Looking at the Views that we have so far...
When we posted our final film onto YouTube we have been focusing on the amount of views we have had from our audience.
On Wednesday 25th March we posted our video and on Friday 3rd April 2015, we decided to look at the views we have had so far for HUNTED....

From looking at this, we can see that we have only gained 6 views, which we did expect to have more however with this only being on here for a week, we decided to wait a little longer to see if we can get anymore views for our project, to tell us if this is a successful film opening or not and this would help us understand by the amount of views we get is by our audience...

Question: Who would be the audience for you media product?

Evaluation - Activity 3
Question: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We have decided to base our distribution institution as "Warner Bros" This is because it is an American media company that makes film, television and music entertainment. As one of the major film studios, it is a subsidiary of Time Warner, with its headquarters in Burbank, California. Warner Bros.
We focused on using this institution as well because going back to when we was planning and suggesting which films our film would be based around, was the Idea of linking it in with the "Conjuring" and this was a film that was distributed by the institution of Warner Bros. This is a well know company for most of its films, for example: looking at the success of the series films of Harry Potters and the Dark Knight. However, when looking at the horror films that they have done such as The Conjuring, The Shining, The Exorcist, The Reaping and many other different films we decided this would be an excellent choice.
When watching the intro to this institution we can also see that it has the old paper brown kind of colour to it, when suggests the idea of being old until it shows the logo which is in the sky, which could represent the new modern era of the company. Therefore, because our opening is based around the idea of being in the past using the flashback and present day scenes the intro would represent this by showing this olden day look to a more newer modern appearance it shows the relevance to our opening to the film.
Therefore, because this institution is a well known major film studio we decided that this would be the best way for "HUNTED" to be distributed and represented by which how much relevance the introduction has with the theme of our horror.

Question: How does you media product represent particular social groups?

Elle Burton - The Little Girl

Elle is the little girl within the opening to our film. So she is portraying this little girl who is unknown the audience until the end of the opening. However we wanted her to mostly portray this innocent little girl and we did this by adding white clothing such as her jumper, scarf, some bits within her coat and her socks. Majority of her shouted out innocence to the audience this also helps to identify this as she is carrying a teddy bear and many young children would do this. We made sure when doing this during filming we would use her natural skin colour, instead of applying any foundation or make-up as we wanted to represent her as being this ghost, so we decided to use her naturally within the film to portray this to the audience. The little girl would come under the audience of Group E, this is because she is only a little girl who is a student and unemployed because of her age, and we wanted to relate this to the audience.

Tyler Long - The unknown male

Tyler plays the main character of the unknown male within the film (The Silhouette). We wanted him to all being in black as this adds the idea of him being unknown and bases him round the area of mystery and darkness. Within his character he is wearing a suit/tie which is showing him to the audience as powerful, business type of person, however the audience doesn't know his true identity until the end of the opening to the film. We would therefore base the Silhouette character around the Group A and Group C1. This is because of how he is seen as this well paid business man within the suit that he is wearing and how near the end we find his true identity he would come under as C1 because he could possibly be seen like a bank clerk or middle management even know as parent at end the little girl's daddy.

Comparisons:

When looking at the little girl who is in the film "The Conjuring" which our film is based around we can see that she also has short hair, showing this venerability and she is also holding a teddy bear like our character is. Therefore, this is demonstrating that because we wanted to base our opening around the film of the Conjuring we wanted to base our little girl character around her with the features such as the hair and props. However, we decided to use white clothing with our character to add in more innocence of a child, therefore or character was based around this type to link in with our social groups.

As we can see looking at this comparison we have the idea of a little girl with a business man who is her dad. This image is linked in with our opening as at the end of the opening the audience find out that the man following the girl throughout the flashbacks and the present day is in fact her dad as she shouts out at the end "DADDY NO!" this image shown in comparison to ours shows that our silhouette character is dressed within a business suit, however ours in more dressed darkly to give that mystery that is needed for our opening. So the reason why Tyler (Silhouette) would be the social group for Group A and C1 because of how he is business, well paid man to the audience at the start and at the end we see him as this employed parent who has a suit that could be connected with being a bank clerk and this comparison clearly shows how we have constructed our character with the example image next to it that we used for the ideas of his character's creation.

Our Scripting
Below is our script for our horror opening, including stage directions, speech and flashback scenes

Script with Stage Directions for Our Horror Opening
Key:
Red Writing – Flashback Scenes
Black Italic Writing – Stage Directions
Normal UN bold Writing - Speech

Fades In - Panoramic shot of the Church front (Camera Steadily goes across)
-          Faintly hearing in the background a little girl humming (Singing a slightly creepy Nursery Rhyme)
We see the little girl beginning to walk into the church entrance, whilst holding an old teddy bear and flowers
Her singing begins to fade, as she begins to start talking to herself under her breath

Little Girl: “Do you think mummy will like these flowers”

The First Flashback Occurs (The Woods): There would be heavy breathing, heartbeats getting faster, heavy footsteps and surrounding noises… With the little girl beginning to run in front view of the camera.
The camera follows the girl walking within the woods however we are never going to be seeing her face.

Back to the Graveyard – The little girl is still talking to herself, shots of her feet holding her teddy bear.

Little Girl: “I think so to, I know she will like these flowers”

The Little girl is humming itsy bitsy spider up until she starts talking

Another Flashback Occurs: Surrounding sounds around the area, with a close up from behind her walking within the woods
Back to the Graveyard – The girl slowly walks towards the grave and starts talking

Little Girl: “Mummy always likes it when I visit her” (Stops Walking)

*flash of an image of man standing in door way*
 (Back to the present)

Little Girl: “But…Daddy doesn't” (carry’s on walking and talking)

The girl suddenly turns towards a tree and stares (This would be a point of shot view)
The Little girl arrives and kneels down at the grave (She starts to talk, leaning the teddy bear against the grave)

Little Girl: “Hello mummy…(Silence/pause)… yeah, I missed you to, Do you like the flowers I got you?”

Third Flashback: Still standing near a tree, background noises stops (Silence) and strange laughing begins to appear
The Little girl looks behind her (Still not showing her face)
Then a close up camera shot of a male’s black shoes, the little girl begins to start running (The Camera follows her from behind)

Back to the grave – She begins to start humming to herself quietly. Something flickers within the corner of her eye and turns to face the tree.
A silhouette of a male in darkness is leaning against the tree watching the girl.
The Camera turns back towards the girl at the grave, getting up quickly whist grabbing onto her teddy bear that she placed down shouting as she gets up

Little Girl: “no, no, no” (Under her breath)

The fourth Flashback: The girl is running and she trips over something amongst the ground (Arms come up to cover/protect her face/head)

Present Day back to the Graveyard – She turns away from the man and begins to start running holding her teddy bear.
She falls over and trips, (Arms come up to cover/protect her face/head) reminds you of her recently doing this within the flashback…
She turns around and gets her knees up, as feet start coming towards her (We are still not going to be seeing her face)

Fifth Flashback: She turns around whilst on the ground after falling over, and starts to scrape backwards, trying to escape.
The camera takes a close up shot of the male’s shoes, as he begins to walk towards her beginning to say something.

The Silhouette: “Sorry my little bird, this is how it has to be”

Sweeping camera shot of the man’s feet to the ground and the little girl’s feet marks where she has been going backwards.
The little girl begins to rise (without seeing her face) saying something

Little Girl: “Please don’t, please…”

Present Day – The girl begins to rock backwards and forwards after falling over as the man walks over to her and stops in front of her.
The girl begins to look up “Not seeing her face) and the male has disappeared.

Sixth Flashback: The girl backs into a corner of some ruins of an abandoned Shack as she still mutters to herself

Little Girl: “no, no, no…please”

A Panoramic screen shot of the male standing in front of the little girl, however only seeing the male in the distance.
The girl begins to go into a foetal position as she begins to realise there is nothing she can do

Present Day - She hears something to the side of her after falling over and turns to get up cuddling tightly to her teddy bear
Camera shot of where she is looking and nothing is there, camera shot goes down to her feet as she begins to take a step forward
A hand grabs her, she falls to the ground. The Laughing starts to appear again…
The man takes a step closer, with a camera shot of only the knife in his hand (Bloodied) this shot carries through to the end. Whilst the little girl screams

Little Girl: “DADDY NO”

The screen then blacks out with the production logo “Archangels Productions” appearing and the title of the film “HUNTED” The song of Itsy bitsy spider would be playing amongst this appearance.

Our Storyboard
Below is our video of the storyboard we have created. With this creation it has enabled us to be able to plan our opening, with how exactly how it shall be scene by scene. Therefore this would make things easier for when we film because we would know what we want and what is going to be happening...

Actor Permission Slip

Whilst we was planning for our Horror opening and when it came to choosing the characters, we chose to have a little girl (Elle Burton) who is in year 7. Therefore we needed permission from her parents/Guardians so below shows the form that we created for them.

Friday 9 January 2015

Cast Photographs

Below is an image of who we have decided to cast as our little girl who is going to be played my Elle Burton
This is who have decided to play the role of the little girl this is because of how we wanted to portray a little innocent girl, and choosing this actor to play her showed that she was suitable for the role as she is a shy and venerable girl who this is what we need for our little girl character to include within her. As well she is a Year 7 pupil and she would be suitable for the age range of the girl we wanted to cast for her so she was the perfect match as she is a small character and can be scared and would play the role with brilliant acting.

Below is who we have also decided to cast as our male Silhouette and he is going to be played by Yr 12 student Tyler Long
This was because he has adult characteristics to him and is easily good a portraying a unhappy (Even thought we don't she his face) However he will have the postures and gestures of an angry mysterious man and would play the role seriously for how the character needs to be portrayed as the unknown, mysterious character and within playing this role it need adult features to be part of the little girl and he was the suitable choice for this decision that we have decided to take.

This is what they look like standing beside each other. The reason why we have decided to take this photo to show is to explain why we chose this characters when looking at their size in height. Which Elle as you can see was perfect to play the role of being innocent and showing that she is small is making her seem more venerable. Whereas looking at Tyler when we wanting to cast the character of the silhouette we wanted to look for someone who could show power and mystery and Tyler was the perfect choice to play this role by being tall towards Elle showing that he has some power over the little girl...

Actual Filming Costumes:

Below shows an image of what the little girl's costume was during filming...

As you can see from this image we had to make many changes to the costume to what we had originally planned for her. However, we still wanted to go with the idea of wearing white, as the innocence needed to be shown and this would of needed the colour white, so we gained a white jumper, scarf and socks, this allowed us to still capture that image the best that we could to how we wanted her to look. The only changes was adding jeans which this still connotes a primary and happy colour and still having the idea of having her hair down to cover her face/identity. However this was an outtake video shown above so her face is on show.

Below shows the Male silhouette's actual Costume:

With this image of our male silhouette we can still see that we have gone with the idea of having him as this dark, mysterious and unknown character and this was shown through this image. As we wanted him to be a silhouette we mainly made his clothing all black, so he would unseen as much and represented as this dark, powerful, dominant character. However, the only thing that has been changed was him not having a red tie this was because we wanted his character to look like an unknown shadow, instead of boldly being stood out amongst the shots.
