Horror Production Company
Logo’s Research
What is it? A Production Company is the involvement in where
that fund films and make profits out of them. They are the companies who
provide the fund, setting and other pieces needed for the film. However with
these, they are able to make people’s work like their own to be like their
normal standard of work, so being in a big international company they could
change a company’s ideas however when being an Independent company you are able
to do whatever you wanted to do in your projects and wouldn't be changed.
Below is some Horror Film Company Production Logo's that I have decided to Research before creating our own as a group:
The First Horror Company Production is: Hammer Film Productions...
As we can see by looking at this we can see that this is a company that mainly cooperates with the idea of Gothic and supernatural Horror and we are looking at the Paranormal Horror for our opening, so this is suitable for our so that's why I decided to look at this one. When looking at this logo we can see that many people would see this as a red colour showing blood and knowing that there is going to be danger and this would be what the audience would want to expect when watching something like this. When looking at this Company we can see that they have created films like the Woman In Black, Dracula and the mummy and different films like that. When looking at this logo we can see that this would appeal out towards the audience because of how it comes out towards you in this bold red colour it is like it is hitting your face it would be seen as a dominant logo which could connote that the Company itself is a dominant and successful institution.
The Second Film Production Company... Universal Studios
From looking at this production company we can see that this is a Global international company who create a large amount of films. This company is seen to the audience as famous and is very well known, and because of the makes people would know that they make great films and they should be films that don't let the audience down and they show off the skills that they have as a company. Being a international well known company they would have high standard expectations to meet towards there audience. However, when looking at the design of the Company's name we can see that they show the earth which this could demonstrate the idea of them being international around the world and being well know to them. This production company has produced horror films such as Child's Play, Frankenstein, Land of the dead and Dead Silence.
The third Production Company is... Rogue Pictures
From looking at this production company we can see that their logo and style of writing has the idea of an fading effect. I thought this was suitable for our horror opening and reason was because we are basing pour opening around the idea of Paranormal and this logo had a ghost appearance look to it. As ghost are know as faded, mysterious beings this logo could connote this because of how it has been represented. This would appeal out towards the audience because it shows the idea of being mysterious and could be something to do with the past and this would be effective towards how the production company would like to run. This company has created horror films like: Half to Death, The Strangers and the return.

Iconography
Iconography is the visual images and symbols used in a work of
art or the study or interpretation of these:
- Lighting
- The screaming Victim
- Characters
- Symbols of Death
- Props
- Binary Oppositions
- Colours
When looking at this we can see that this is going to be used in films because it shows the genre and interpretation of the different genres based around symbols and works of art. So these are going to be using this because it then enables them to connote the film to different connotations where used. This would then be giving more ideas of this towards the audience and creating thoughts about what the film genre is about and why are they used. It can also be used to help with the understanding of why colours have been used and what they are showing towards what they are showing, with the sense of certain props and items and character that are being used. The reason why they use these in films is because it create effect for the arts that they use towards the audience making it more understanding for them and creating the effect of why they are using certain things demonstrating the genre of their films.
When using iconography in supernatural horrors they are used when using props like for example when looking at the film of the woman in Black when the candle prop is being light in the dark room and nothing is happening and mystery is happening we are then able to know that something bad is going to happen through this and this is being shown through iconography.
When looking at this we can see that iconography is used as effective because it is enabling us as the audience to be able to make interpretations through symbols and work of these related to the films. This makes it much more out of the box when using these as this is because instead of always using trailer and films and quotes using symbols it creates that effect and people as the audience are then able to make interpretations of what will happen. By doing this it is creating the effect because of how it is more perspective for the audience using different measures to show these different things shown in the different aspects of iconography with the use of colour and how it can connote the aspects of the film so for example we can interpret that when seeing Gorey horrors we know that the colours of red and black would be more expected .

Costume Analysis - The Girl
Below is a few images of an idea that our little girls can be represented like in our Horror opening:
The costumes used in the film "Mamma" for this young girls are sort of the idea we would like to use. As we have the idea of making our girl seem innocent and no danger, however she will be in danger.
As we can see in these picture they have dressed the girls mostly in pyjamas, which representing them in this costume is kind of giving them a a sign of innocence and that they are children getting ready for bed, which sleeping is relaxing and silent, so they have been shown in an innocent kind of aspect. With the use of looking at the trousers that she has been shown in, they are showing flowers, however this is also showing the sign of being peaceful and beautiful, with the aspects of still showing the free zone danger of the child. So however we know that we want our little girl to be an innocent character we also want her to be shown that she is in danger, however not being the danger herself.
As we look at this other research image we can see the girl dressed all in white, which is another idea that we want to go with. By representing a child in a white dress it is showing that she is alone, and that she could be that lost innocent soul, yet again focusing on the idea of being an innocent character. By showing her in an old fashionable dress, our opening will be based around flashbacks, we can see that it is giving the idea of being a flash back costume because of how it is being back in the past by placing her in an old fashionable white dress.
Looking at more similar characters from other films based around our female character:
Costume Analysis - The Male
The Costume Analysis for the strange male figure:
We have decided to go for this costume for the strange male figure within the background, this is because dressing the male in a business suit it shows that he has power and by giving him a bold large red tie we can see that the colour red we can represent this with the idea of being danger and the sign of blood and because he is a strange figure, we want him to have blood marks and dirt shown on him to give him that affect of being like a strange mysterious business man who has something to do with our character of the little girl.

Film Classification - BBFC
The BBFC stands for the "British Board of Film Classification" This company is where they decide what age range classification is suitable for each film. They look at age ranges like U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18. This company is to decide what film is suitable for the correct age range, so this company tries to make sure that correct items like violence, discrimination or any other themes are suitable for the correct film for the correct age range to watch the film. By doing this they are editing or directing the company into the direct way for the suitable scenes in the film.
What do the different Age ranges mean?
U = This means that the film is suitable for all ages.
PG = This film is then all suitable for all ages, however it comes to parent's judgement for them to watch it.
12 = This film is always going to be suitable for people ages from 12 and over
12A = This is a cinema release which is where it is suitable for ages 12 and over however with a parent present.
15 = This is a film that is only suitable for people of aged 15 and over.
18 = This film is only suitable for people ages 18 and over.
18R = This is where you have to be fully 18 and over as it is fully restricted for the younger people of 18.
The reason why this film have been given these age range is because certain people can only watch films that are correct for their age range. This is decided by the BBFC and they have been given this change because of what is happening within the film.
Below are some examples of Horror films classified by the BBFC and why they have been given these ages:
The Woman in Black
The Woman in Black was given an age rating of a classification of 12 by the BBFC. This was because it included very strong horror and physiological threat
Paranormal Activity:
Paranormal Activity has been rates a 15. This is because this film contains strong language and threat. So therefore the BBFC would have rated this a 15 because of what it includes and because of the strong amount of language this would be suitable for the 15 and over. This is because as well of the supernatural events that it includes within the film.
Insidious:
Insidious film (2011) as also been rated a 15. This has been rated by the BBFC, this is because it contains strong horror and menace. This has been given this because strong horror would not be suitable for under 15's so this has been given at least the earliest of a 15 to still keep a wide selection of audiences.
Saw:
The film saw has been rated an 18 aged film by the BBFC. This is because it contains strong bloody violence and language. Therefore, because of this it has been rated an 18 because bloody violence and language would not be allowed with the under ages.

Analysis of a Horror Opening Titles (1)
The Opening title that I have decided to analyse is "Insidious"
When looking at these 9 screen shots from the horror opening titles to the film "Insidious" we can see many different things that we can analyse from this so lets take a look...
Q.)How Does the title sequence establish genre, character and narrative?
When looking at this title opening title we can see that the genre of this title could relate to the topic of "paranormal" aspects. I can think this because when watching the title we can see that this could be what is happening because, when looking at the writing within the credits it is showing the writing fading slowly away which this could be linking in with how a ghost fades away giving it that paranormal theme. When looking at this we can even see that the images of empty rooms within this house that it could be showing which has been shown in one of the screen shots above. With the emptiness of the rooms that have been shown, this could be showing a start of a new house maybe the sense of new beginnings, showing that new things always don't always turn out good.
When looking at the characters within this opening title we can see that when looking at the characters we can see in one of the screen shots above an image of a photo frame that could be representing the family that is linked in with this film. When looking at this family we can see the normal happy family however with this being a horror film we could possibly see that this family is going to go through pain and horror with many twists and turns to it.
Q.) How does the title sequence attract an audience's interest?
The title sequence would attract the audience because of how dark and in depth of the paranormal effect. With just watching the sequence we have linked it in with the genre of horror, however this would be creating the effect for the audience because of how it sets the scene with only using the colours of black and red creating that sense of mystery and danger within the film. However when looking at the title when the title of "Insidious" appears it is shown boldly with mixed colours of the black and red colours which are being shown throughout the whole sequence, with title have red and black being mixed together we can see the different senses of danger and that sense of mystery. With the use of the slightly small images with the black background it is also giving it the sense of darkness and the fear of knowing what is going to happen and what are these images representing within the title could these be linking in with the actual movie could these be screen shots of this? Therefore these titles will create and effect for the audience because of the mystery that is being shown within the titles wanting to know what is going to happen in this film and why is this going to happen the audience would want to know what these are meaning and the use of the titles are teasing the audience creating an interest of what paranormal activity/stories are going to happen and why?
Q.) What do you consider to be the target audience of this film and why?
When watching this opening title of the film "Insidious" I believe that the target audience of this film could be for 15 years and old maybe going onto the 18 year old's this is because of the depth this would go into because thinking about the possible violent or traumatic scenes that could be included in this film. However thinking about this some people maybe under 15 would still consider watching this maybe because of parent permission however a film as a suitable age range for the reasons of what the film includes for example the violence, any swearing, etc. Therefore I believe this filmed is aimed at 15 years and older attracting more to the younger audiences then the older because of the features it includes and many younger people watch daring films then those older people who would of watched many of these films including the suitable age features.
Q.) Who are the producers of this film and why is it evident to the title sequence?
The film insidious was produced by: Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli. When looking at these producers we can see that they all are producers of "Paranormal" films including the films like paranormal activity and The Purge. We can see this is evident within the title sequence because it is showing the horror and the sense of paranormal activity within the opening with the sense of fading fonts and words, the colour use of the darkness and the red maybe for the fear of the past, when looking at these producers we can all see that they link in with the opening titles as they are all based around Paranormal films and Insidious is a "paranormal" film.
Below is a Video showing the Insidious title openings:

Analysis of a Horror Opening Titles (2)
The second opening titles that I decided to analyse was "The Omen" The Video to this is shown below:
Q.)How Does the title sequence establish genre, character and narrative?
When looking at the opening titles to "The Omen" we can see straight away that is in linked in with the genre of horror. With this is mind we can see that for the credits of the title it has used the colours of white and black which are not really cheerful colours, representing the darkness and mystery of this title. However, we can see the white in this does stand out with the black making it bold and easy to read, however it is still giving us the genre of horror. When focusing on the music that is used in this opening title is linked in with the sound of the devil, almost showing it like a hymn of the devil worshiping linking this in with religion. When focusing in on the music we can see that it is loud and is kind of in your face throughout the sequence creating the feature of your eyes being glued to the screen thinking that something is going to happen throughout the title giving it the sense of false tension building. In the title we can see a small child in the background surrounded by the colour of red which could represent blood or evil, making it a dark title making it mysterious. When see the child it would makes us think of them being harmful and playful, however focusing on the title we can see that this child could be linked in with the idea of the devil because of the cross that has been shadowed from him and the devil links to horror, showing the child could be the main character within this film creating the tension questioning for the audience and wanting them to find out what is going to happen and who he is and what the horror genre is based around.
Q.) How does the title sequence attract an audience's interest?
This would create interest for the audience whilst watching this opening title because it is showing the idea of mystery with the colours that have been presented within the opening, the audience are wanting to want to find out what is going to happen within the film because as we can see the opening title is not giving a lot away of what the film could be about only giving hints of what it could be about with the idea of religion and the devil linking together because of the use of black and red which links in with the devil and for the audience to want to find out what this genre of horror has got to do with the child being located throughout the titles this is giving mystery, yet again with the idea of the questioning for the audience and the interest for them being wanting to find out what is going to happen and why these specific hints have been given within the opening titles.
Q.) What do you consider to be the target audience of this film and why?
The target audience that I would consider this film being for is the age from young adults looking around 15 to 18 and the older audience who enjoy the mystery of horror films. I think this because it uses violence and swearing with things in the film including death features for young children even though the film includes a child this would be more for young adults who enjoy the expected horror films and the older generation who like the mystery side of horrors and to find out what is going to happen throughout the film.
Q.) Who are the producers of this film and why is it evident to the title sequence?
The producer of "The Omen" is Harvey Bernhard. When looking at other work by Harvey he has done a couple of other horror films along with the other sequels of the Omen. Examples of his other films were "The beast within" and "The Lost Boys" When focusing on the other films we can see that he links in with the idea of including young children or teenager within a horror films of his I suppose this is they way he sees horror including these different ages and who possibly the age of audiences they would be aimed at. We can see that is work is evident within the title sequence because we can see the different colours of red and white which he has also used in the Omen title sequence that we have analysed, from looking at this we can see that he likes to use the idea of darkness and mystery within his opening title sequences which show he is the producer of this.
